Central team begins ground assessment of Assam flood devastation in Charaideo

Guwahati, July 26: A six-member Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) on Sunday began its on-ground assessment of Assam’s flood devastation with a visit to Charaideo district, one of the worst-hit regions, as the Centre evaluates the scale of damage for relief and rehabilitation assistance.

Led by Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary M. Ramachandrudu, the team comprises senior officials from the Central Water Commission, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC).

The delegation visited Sumoni village, where floodwaters had inundated homes and farmland, and interacted with affected families to assess the impact of the disaster. The officials also reviewed ongoing rescue, relief and rehabilitation measures while taking stock of losses to agriculture, infrastructure and public property.

Charaideo Deputy Commissioner Neha Yadav briefed the team on relief camp operations, the distribution of essential supplies and preliminary estimates of the damage caused by the floods.

“We have shared detailed data on the damage to roads, embankments and agricultural land. This assessment is crucial for us to secure adequate Central support,” an official said.

The visit marks the beginning of a four-day assessment covering the flood-hit districts of Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat. During the tour, which concludes on July 29, the IMCT will inspect damaged infrastructure, review relief measures and use satellite imagery from the National Remote Sensing Centre to supplement ground assessments of the destruction.

The team’s findings are expected to form the basis for the Centre’s decision on additional financial assistance for Assam’s flood recovery.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Sunday, with water levels receding in most affected areas that did not receive overnight rainfall. However, the disaster continues to affect over 6.5 lakh people across six districts, while the cumulative death toll from this year’s floods has risen to 66.
