Shillong, July 26: A four-day search operation by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) ended on Saturday morning with the recovery of the body of a man who had gone missing in the Wahniangleng River near Phra Mer in Mylliem, authorities said.

The body was retrieved at around 7.10 am from the river after an intensive search involving SDRF personnel, Mawngap Police and local residents.

The operation was launched on July 22 after the disappearance of a resident of Phra Mer was reported. Rescue teams combed deep gorges and stretches of the Wahniangleng River, deploying a Rubber Inflatable Boat (RIB) to search areas downstream from the Mawphlang Dam.

Despite extensive searches on July 23 and 24, covering both upstream and downstream sections of the river, the missing person could not be traced.

On July 25, local residents spotted the body trapped in a confined section of the river. SDRF personnel rushed to the spot but were forced to suspend recovery efforts due to strong currents and hazardous river conditions.

The operation resumed early on Saturday, when the rescue team successfully recovered the body.

The deceased was later handed over to Mawngap Police for legal formalities and further investigation.
