Youth-led peace march in Tura calls for education reform, accountability

Protesters also raise concerns over Manipur violence, Assam floods, Nagaland landslides and civil rights

Tura, July 26: Scores of young people marched through the streets of Tura on Sunday, demanding reforms in the education system, greater administrative accountability and action on a range of national and regional issues, from the Manipur conflict to Assam’s floods.

The rally, organised by the Artist Society under the banner “A Call to Garo Hills”, began at Chandmari Playground with a brief address, followed by a minute of silence and prayers for those who lost their lives in recent incidents of unrest.

Carrying placards and raising slogans such as “Mikrakbo! Chakatbo! Ahowee!” and “Educational Reform”, the protesters marched nearly 1.8 km through Ringre, Upper Chandmari Junction and Babupara before culminating at DC Park.

Addressing the gathering, event host Katta Nisa said the protest was aimed at seeking accountability over recent developments in the education sector and alleged administrative failures.

Referring to the controversy surrounding Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Nisa said the movement was not only about a minister’s resignation but about ensuring responsibility is fixed for decisions that have affected students across the country.

The organisers also condemned the recent police action against student protesters and urged governments to safeguard democratic rights and peaceful dissent.

Beyond education, the rally highlighted several issues affecting the Northeast and the country, including the continuing ethnic violence in Manipur, the devastating floods in Assam, fatal landslides in Nagaland, farmer protests and what participants described as increasing restrictions on civil liberties.

After the march, participants gathered at DC Park for an open civic discussion, where speakers called on young people to transform public anger into sustained civic engagement and informed advocacy rather than short-lived protests.

Placards, songs and artistic performances formed a prominent part of the demonstration, with organisers using creative expression to convey messages of peace, solidarity and social justice.

The organisers said the initiative was intended to encourage greater youth participation in public discourse while fostering unity across communities in Garo Hills.
