Guwahati, Nov 25: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that the death of popular singer and actor Zubeen Garg in Singapore was not an accident but “a clear case of murder.”
Garg, 52, died on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore. Initial reports had described the incident as accidental.
Speaking in the Assam Legislative Assembly during a discussion initiated through an adjournment motion moved by the Opposition, Sarma asserted that the investigation has already indicated foul play.

“It is a plain and simple murder,” the Chief Minister said, a remark he later shared on his official X handle. He said the Speaker allowed the adjournment motion at his request to ensure that the issue was taken up on the first day of the Winter Session.
Sarma informed the House that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted under the CID added Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita — pertaining to murder — within three days of Garg’s death based on preliminary findings.
So far, seven individuals have been arrested, 252 witnesses examined and 29 items seized in connection with the case, he said.
“One of the accused killed Garg and others assisted him. Four to five people are being booked in the murder case,” Sarma claimed.
He added that after the murder chargesheet is filed in December, the probe will expand to examine possible angles of negligence, criminal breach of trust and other related offences.
