Guwahati, March 29: With the Assam Assembly elections approaching, political rhetoric has sharpened across the state as senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a campaign in Titabor.
Addressing a series of public meetings in the Titabor Assembly constituency on Saturday, Gogoi alleged that “people of Assam do not want to witness the dirty politics” of the current Chief Minister, while urging voters to back Congress candidate Pran Kurmi.
Positioning Kurmi as a grassroots leader from the tea community, Gogoi framed the contest as larger than an electoral battle. “This is not just about supporting a candidate—it is about respecting the dignity, rights, and development of the tea community,” he said, appealing for a united mandate in favour of the opposition alliance.
Gogoi accused the BJP-led government of adopting “authoritarian” practices, alleging intimidation in the implementation of welfare schemes. He claimed that women beneficiaries were being pressured to attend political programmes, including listening to the Prime Minister’s outreach initiatives, or risk losing benefits.
He stressed that governance should prioritise essential sectors such as education, rural infrastructure, and price control, rather than what he described as “politics of inducement.”
Raising concerns over public services, Gogoi alleged that the closure of government schools has forced children to travel long distances, while the rise of private institutions has made education unaffordable for many families.
He also criticised the state’s healthcare system, claiming that government hospitals face shortages of doctors and medicines, compelling patients to seek treatment in private facilities.
Invoking the legacy of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Gogoi accused the current leadership of deviating from earlier development priorities and betraying public trust.
In a pointed remark, he questioned the Chief Minister over past claims of producing evidence on certain allegations. “He had said he wouldn’t go home at night if he failed to provide proof—so where does he sleep now?” Gogoi quipped.
Gogoi also raised questions over the lack of action against Badruddin Ajmal for alleged controversial remarks, accusing the BJP and NDA of engaging in selective politics.
Reaffirming Congress’s campaign pitch, he assured that welfare schemes would continue and be strengthened if the party comes to power, with benefits delivered without political conditions.
Calling upon voters to support Pran Kurmi, Gogoi said the candidate’s association with Tarun Gogoi’s legacy and his grassroots connect would help drive development in Titabor.
