Plan for an Army camp in Dhubri

Must read

Guwahati, June 25: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday visited Dhubri to review the law and order situation firsthand following communal unrest sparked by the discovery of cattle near a temple during Eid-ul-Adha.

Calling for maintaining religious harmony, Sarma demanded the immediate surrender of the alleged key instigator behind the incident. “We have to stop these people from this business of throwing beef, else others will start placing pork at different places,” the chief minister warned.

He further stressed the need for mutual respect among communities, saying, “Those who are doing it should understand that if Hindus don’t like one form of meat, Muslims also do not prefer another. If beef is thrown in front of temples and namghars (Vaishnavite places of worship), what will they do if pork is placed in front of mosques?”

Earlier, on June 8, Sarma had stated that several cattle were allegedly slaughtered illegally during the Bakrid festival, with parts of the meat deliberately scattered across various locations in Assam to provoke communal tensions.

According to official figures, 151 people have been arrested so far in connection with the unrest, including more than 50 from Dhubri alone.

Sarma assured that while the situation in Dhubri has stabilized, the government is considering long-term measures, including setting up an army camp in the region to bolster security and deter future disturbances.
