Guwahati, Aug 24: A plantation drive scheduled at Rengma Reserve Forest in Assam’s Golaghat district, along the Assam-Nagaland border, was postponed on Saturday after a decision was made to wait for the approval of the Nagaland chief minister before proceeding.
Senior ministers and officials from both states visited the proposed plantation site and agreed to move forward jointly after necessary consultations. The Assam team was led by Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, while Nagaland was represented by Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton.
“Both evictions and plantations will continue. Today’s plantation didn’t take place as the Deputy CM of Nagaland will have to apprise his chief minister about the exercise. Once he takes approval, the drive will be conducted,” Patowary told reporters.
He clarified that while Assam had already secured the chief minister’s nod to go ahead, it was decided to proceed together with Nagaland in the spirit of cooperation, as the neighbouring state had also expressed willingness.
Assam shares a 512.1-km border with Nagaland, where disputes have persisted since the creation of the latter in 1963. The matter is currently pending before the Supreme Court. Earlier this year, the Assam Assembly was informed that 59,490.21 hectares of land had been encroached upon by Nagaland.
