Agartala, June 7: Police have launched investigations into two alleged incidents of cow slaughter in Tripura’s Udaipur subdivision during Eid-ul-Zuha that sparked tensions, protests, and concerns over potential communal unrest.
Four persons have been arrested in connection with the first incident, which took place near the Gomati riverbank in Chanban under the Gomati Para area. According to officials, the cow was allegedly slaughtered in public view, triggering anger among locals, especially members of a Hindu group affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), who reportedly witnessed the act and raised an alarm.
The situation escalated quickly, prompting the rapid deployment of senior police officers and personnel from the Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) to control the crowd and prevent any violence. The cow’s carcass was later buried under administrative supervision to avoid further provocation.
“Despite a large-scale deployment to prevent such incidents, one case came to our notice where a cow was slaughtered behind a house near the river. We detained those involved and have begun legal proceedings,” said SDPO Nirman Das.
A second incident was reported from the Rajnagar area, near the historic Bhuvaneswari Temple. Though the slaughter reportedly took place within a private residence, news of the act led to protests and a brief confrontation between members of two communities. Some property damage was reported, but no injuries were confirmed.
Authorities have intensified patrolling in both areas and urged residents to maintain peace and refrain from spreading or reacting to rumours.
Officials said the situation is under control but remains sensitive. Appeals have been made for communal harmony as investigations continue.
