Williamnagar, May 8: The District Agriculture Office of East Garo Hills on Thursday distributed power tillers to farmers under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) and the State Plan Scheme at Williamnagar.
Local MLA and Cabinet Minister Marcuise N. Marak attended the programme as chief guest, while Additional Deputy Commissioner Reuben Ch. Momin, Agriculture Department officials and beneficiaries were also present.

A total of eight power tillers were distributed to selected farmers from Samanda, Rongjeng and Songsak C&RD Blocks. Of these, four were allotted to Rongjeng Block, while Songsak and Samanda Blocks received two each.
Addressing the gathering, Marak said the scheme, jointly supported by the State and Central Governments, aims to assist farmers through subsidised agricultural machinery and promote mechanised farming among small and marginal farmers.

He said the initiative would help reduce dependence on manual labour, improve the timeliness of agricultural operations and enhance farm productivity and efficiency.
The Minister also urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the machinery to improve agricultural production and strengthen their livelihoods.
