Tourism potential being lost due to bad roads

Tura, Nov 13: Villagers, students, youth organizations and even nokmas staged a public protest rally in Karkukol area of Siju in South Garo Hills on Monday against the horrific road conditions plaguing the region and blamed it for destroying the rich tourism potential of the famous region.

The protest rally was organized by the Garo Students Union of Karukol which demanded upon the government to take immediate steps to restore road communication which has been further disrupted following last year’s floods and landslides that ravaged Siju area leading to loss of lives.

“The national highway NH-62 is crucial for the people of Karukol region but it has been left ignored by the concerned authorities for decades. To make matters worse, even the PMGSY-2 roads which was supposed to be completed by now has been left abandoned,” stated GSU general secretary France R Marak.

He said that some areas like Simsang Chijol and Rongdik Chijol are literally cut off from proper communication and the people have been enduring immense hardships for years.

“The Karukol Siju region is the most scenic and tourism area of Garo Hills but due to the bad roads tourists are reluctant to come. The bad roads are impacting the growth of tourism and also hindering the local economy from being raised,” added the student leader.

The student union has warned of more agitations to come unless the government takes steps to address this burning issue of bad road conditions.
