Remkhla Valley Wahrilang Viewpoint emerges as Eastern West Khasi Hills’ newest green escape

Must read

Mairang, May 28 : Under the dramatic monsoon sky, on undulating green hills which appears to extend in an endless sequence all the way up to the horizon line, a tranquil valley in Eastern West Khasi Hills is gradually gaining ground as one of the most scenic new destinations in Meghalaya.

The Remkhla Valley Wahrilang Viewpoint in Nonglait village, Mawthadraishan Block, is now all set to be opened to the public, and the place has an unparalleled combination of winding stream, round grass-covered hills, colossal river stones, hanging bridges that seem straight out of a storybook.

Lying underneath the famous Markham or Dommurok Viewpoint, the valley had always attracted travellers and tourists who, upon observing the sheer scale of the scenery below from the clifftop, would make their way down into the valley, only to find an even more serene abode with flowing streams, emerald slopes, and wooden hanging bridges known locally as Wahrilang.

As one moves through the valley, at every turn it unfolds another picture postcard-perfect view.

Located almost 25km from Mairang, Nonglait village, from where the tourist spot is around three kilometers away, is surrounded by rounded green hills and streams that meander across the entire area.

This landscape in Meghalaya, famous for its varied terrains and views, appears to retain an untamed character.

Secretary of the Village Executive Committee (VEC) of Nonglait village, Apkalobis Thabah, told reporters that the concept for this venture arose when an old bridge over a stream in the valley collapsed.

It is said that the natural beauty of the valley as well as the tourism prospect was observed during an inspection visit by district officials.

Thabah also stated that tourists coming to see Markham Viewpoint would also visit the valley in order to see how beautiful it is. Apart from Meghalayans, tourists from outside the state also visited this valley, and commented about the tranquil place.
The villagers finally decided to officially open it as a tourist spot, the inaugural ceremony also featuring the opening of three newly built bridges across the valley for ease of access.

The official inaugural ceremony is slated to be held on May 30, 2026.

The development of the valley is expected to benefit the people of Nonglait by creating new livelihood options, such as guiding and small eateries, transporters and small guest houses, in addition to showcasing a quieter side of Meghalaya’s tourism.
While the state is already famous for its water falls, caves, and living root bridges, the Remkhla Valley seems to set out to find its own place-a tranquil, serene, untouched side of Meghalaya’s diverse and naturally scenic locations.
