Shillong, Aug 21: An anonymous letter to the headmen of Mawlai Town Dorbar has claimed that the rifles snatched from Meghalaya Police personnel on August 15 have been dumped in the river from the Umpohliew bridge, Jaiaw Laitdom, Jaiaw-Polo link road.

The letter, which was sent on Friday evening and also addressed to the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills and the press, said on August 15, the anonymous person and his friends were walking through Lawmali when they met with a bunch of teenagers aged 15-16 years holding the weapons. After they interrogated them, they found out that they had snatched the rifles from the policemen at Mawkynroh.

“As senior people, and fearing that these kids might misuse it, we immediately took them away and threw ‘the three rifles’ at Umpohliew Bridge,” claimed the letter.

The letter said the anonymous person felt the need to inform about the weapons after seeing news of government and locality heads repeatedly urging to return those weapons.

Since the weapons have already been dumped into the river and their fate unknown, the anonymous person also apologized for their actions as they were more ‘concerned about the good and safety of those young boys’.

The letter also urged the people concerned to see if there is any way to fish out the rifles and was hopeful that they would find it.

A picture of the bridge and the river was also attached with the letter.
