Aizawl, Aug 18: Cases of abuse against women are on the rise in Mizoram, even as women continue to play a dominant role in Mizo society.
According to the Mizoram Women and Child Development Department, an average of 1,166 cases of abuse were reported monthly through its helpline during 2024–25.
The figure has climbed to over 1,870 cases per month in the current financial year (2025–26).
Between April and July 2025 alone, the department’s helpline recorded 7,481 cases of abuse. The reports are broadly categorised as domestic and non-domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse includes physical violence, verbal threats, intimidation, financial exploitation, sexual abuse, and the forced intoxication of women using drugs or alcohol.
Data shows that 71% of victims are women aged between 18 and 40 years, 18% are between 40 and 60 years, while women over 60 account for about 2.5% of cases.
