Baghmara, Nov 27: The 6th Edition of the Captain Williamson Sangma Memorial Football Tournament concluded with a thrilling finale at the Baghmara Government Higher Secondary School playground on Thursday.
The final match featured Risyon Sports Club from Shillong and Chibasal FC from Gasuapara, Garo Hills.
Since 2018, this tournament has been supported and guided by the MLA of Rongara–Siju Constituency, Rakkam A. Sangma, with an aim to promote football and encourage the youth of South Garo Hills. This year, a total of 32 teams participated in the tournament, making the competition highly spirited and engaging.
The grand finale was graced by the Deputy Commissioner of South Garo Hills, Sumit Kumar Singh, as the Chief Guest and the Superintendent of Police, SGH, Shailendra Bamaniya. A special song performance by Chiambe Marak of Siju, a famous Atong Singer who sang the trending song entitled ‘Nangmi Balga’ of Siju added colour and excitement to the event.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner expressed his delight at being part of the championship match. He appreciated the organisers and MLA Rakkam A. Sangma for their efforts in hosting such significant sporting events for the youth of the region stating that such events help the youths to turn away from bad habits.
With loud cheers from enthusiastic spectators, the match began with intense competition from both sides. Risyon Sports Club got its first golden opportunity with a penalty kick, but the goalkeeper of Chibasal Football Club made a brilliant save. Shortly after, Thomas Dhkar (Jersey No. 16) of Risyon SC scored the first goal. The second goal for Risyon SC was netted by Paul Lyngdoh (Jersey No. 3).
Later in the match, Thomas Dhkar received a yellow card for repeatedly faking injuries. After the start of the second half, Chibasal FC scored their first goal through Rojen Mosahari (Jersey No. 27). Giving a tough fight, Chibasal FC equalized with another goal scored by their player wearing Jersey No. 12.
However, in the final minute, Risyon SC scored once more and clinched the winner’s trophy along with a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakhs, while Chibasal FC secured the runner-up trophy with a cash prize of Rs. 1.25 lakhs.
The Top Scorer of the tournament was awarded to Tengrik Marak of Bapuji Club who scored 11 goals in the tournament. The Best Goalkeeper was awarded to Lastborn Ch. Marak of Chibasal FC and best player was awarded to Baker Wahlang (Jersey No.2) of Risyon Sports Club.
