Shillong, Nov 27: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has expressed his support for the Khasi Students’ Union’s (KSU) opposition to the reappointment of the National Law University (NLU) Vice Chancellor, citing alleged misuse of power.

“We should not encourage the violation of any rules in place,” Rymbui said after a meeting with the KSU delegation on Thursday.

“I also totally agree, if the rules say that there should be no extension (of the tenure).”

Rymbui emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of individuals in positions of authority, stating, “Any iota of doubt on the integrity of any individual, we (government) should take step.”

The minister also highlighted the government’s ambition for NLU Meghalaya to become a top-notch university, producing alumni who will hold prominent legal positions.

“We have the ambition that this university will be one of the top-notch universities in the country, which we hope that some alumni who passed out from this university, will hold some legal position in one form or the other – that they will be supreme court judge or anything like that,” Rymbui said.

The education minister has also assured that investigation into the allegations will follow after the decision on the Vice Chancellor’s tenure.
