Agartala, May 20: For the first time in over five decades, Tripura’s Sepahijala Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary has welcomed the birth of three tiger cubs, marking a historic moment for the northeastern state.
The cubs were born last week to a tigress inside the zoo enclosure, bringing immense joy to zoo officials and wildlife enthusiasts. “This is for the first time in the history of the Sepahijala Zoo, a tigress in the enclosures gave birth to three tiger cubs at once since the zoo was set up in 1972,” said Biswajit Das, Director of the Zoo, on Monday.
With the arrival of the cubs, the number of big cats at the sanctuary has now risen to five. The mother and her cubs are reportedly healthy and thriving under close observation.

The proud mother was brought to Sepahijala Zoo from West Bengal in February last year as part of an animal exchange programme. The successful breeding is seen as a major milestone for the zoo’s conservation efforts.
Forest, Science and Technology and Environment Minister Animesh Debbarma lauded the zoo staff for their dedication and expressed delight over the birth of the cubs.
Located about 35 km south of Agartala, the Sepahijala Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary spans over 18.53 square kilometres and is a prominent tourist destination in the region. With the arrival of the cubs, it is set to attract even more visitors eager to witness the new symbols of hope and wildlife renewal.
