NIA arrests key suspect in 2024 Manipur IRB post attack that killed one policeman

Shillong, May 20: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a key suspect linked to the 2024 attack on an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) post in the Moreh area of Tengnoupal district in Manipur, which resulted in the death of one Manipur Police personnel and left two others seriously injured.

The accused, Thangminlar Mate alias Lenin Mate, a resident of Tengnoupal, was apprehended on Sunday in Silchar in Assam.

In a statement, NIA said Mate’s affiliation to any militant group is not clear yet.

The attack occurred on January 17, 2024, when a group of armed miscreants opened fire on a security post in the sensitive border town of Moreh. The ambush led to the death of one police official, with two others suffering serious injuries.

According to the NIA statement, the Silchar court has granted the agency transit remand custody of Mate, making him the first person arrested in the case registered as RC-05/2024/NIA/IMP. He will be produced before the NIA Special Court in Guwahati.

The NIA continues to investigate the case.
