Star Cement violence: Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla appeals for peace

Must read

Shillong, May 20: Following the torching of over a dozen trucks at Star Cement in Lumshnong after a fatal road accident, Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla has appealed for calm and urged the public not to take the law into their own hands.

In an interview with Hub News on Monday, Shylla expressed deep concern over the incident and said she had been in constant touch with authorities since the violence erupted. “As soon as we got the news yesterday, I called the Additional SP since the SP was out of station. Around 300 people had gathered at Star Cement, and they were not listening to the police, despite the presence of the OC and other officers. Some even attempted to attack them,” she said.

She informed that additional police forces were quickly deployed to manage the situation. “When we sent in more personnel, some in the crowd dispersed. Others stayed back and explained the issue. For now, police presence has been strengthened and more reinforcements have been called in to ensure peace. I believe things have stabilized, and we hope it stays that way.”

Shylla also reflected on the root of the unrest. While no official report has been submitted yet, she indicated the violence may have been triggered by a local dispute among drivers. “I have asked the authorities for a detailed report. We are waiting for the full picture,” she said.

The MLA expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of the young pick-up driver. “I’m deeply saddened by the death of the young boy. He was very young. It’s heartbreaking,” she said. “This was a local issue that escalated into something much bigger. Around 15 trucks were burnt, that’s a huge loss for the company and a matter of great concern for all of us,” she added.

When asked about efforts to de-escalate tensions, Shylla said that police are in close contact with local residents and are working to prevent any further flare-ups. “We just want to ensure that nothing untoward happens during the night. If anyone has any grievance, they should file an FIR. The law will take its course.”

Regarding her visit to the site, the MLA said she was currently in Shillong for official work but would head to Lumshnong as soon as possible. “Once I finish my engagements here, I’ll visit the area immediately,” she assured.

In her message to the people of Lumshnong and Jaintia Hills, Shylla urged restraint and legal recourse. “Please don’t take the law into your own hands. If you see anything wrong, report it to the nearby police station. We, as your representatives, are also here to act on your concerns. Let’s not resort to violence. We don’t want to see anyone else hurt,” she said.

It may be mentioned that the unrest erupted on Sunday evening after a young pick-up driver lost his life in a road accident in Lumshnong, East Jaintia Hills. In response, an irate mob stormed the premises of Star Cement, vandalized security posts and equipment, set fire to 14–15 trucks, and assaulted security and fire brigade personnel. The police, though initially outnumbered, eventually brought the situation under control after deploying additional forces. A case has been registered, and investigations are ongoing.
