Shillong, August 5: Seasoned politician and Mylliem MLA Ronnie V. Lyngdoh officially joined the National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday, marking a major realignment in Meghalaya’s political landscape. The induction ceremony, held in Shillong, witnessed the presence of top NPP leadership including Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, and several Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, MDCs, and party workers.
The former Leader of Opposition and Opposition Chief Whip formally severed ties with the Indian National Congress and merged with the ruling NPP on July 30. His official induction was completed with the signing of the party form on stage, followed by the welcoming of several of his supporters into the party fold.
A massive crowd, comprising largely of Ronnie’s supporters, gathered for the event, turning the function into a show of strength. Addressing the gathering, Lyngdoh said he was overwhelmed by the warm welcome, adding, “My legs are still shaking—I did not expect such a warm welcome… but it fills me with happiness to be part of this stream of change.”
He clarified that there were no deals or preconditions for his switch, stating: “I joined because I saw a clear path to work—not just talk.” Citing the success of the government’s Floriculture Mission and the need for stability, he said, “This step was not taken for personal or political convenience, but to ensure that the work we have started reaches its intended goals.”
Lyngdoh also urged unity within the party ranks, noting, “The uniform I wear has changed, but the heart I carry remains the same.”
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, in his address, hailed Lyngdoh’s decision as a “game-changer” and thanked his family and supporters for their role in the move. He said, “In politics, there is no permanent enemy or friend—only a permanent commitment to the people. This merger is a reflection of that spirit.”
The Chief Minister further lauded the political maturity of all party leaders involved, including Hamletson Dohling, for embracing the larger vision of development over personal differences. He also promised to intensify development in Mylliem, assuring that “all hurdles have now been overcome.”
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong addressed speculation around Lyngdoh’s switch by stating, “Bah Ronnie was bought with development and with the love and support of the people.” He also pledged that the long-pending four-laning of the Mylliem to Umshyrpi road will be completed by December.
With this induction, the NPP now boasts a record 33 MLAs—an unprecedented achievement in Meghalaya’s political history.
The event concluded with a unified call for cooperation, development, and grassroots empowerment. Chief Minister Sangma remarked, “Let’s not call it old workers and new workers—this is one family now. And in 2028, Mylliem will be ours again—stronger than ever.”
