Shillong, June 18: The Shillong All Faiths Forum (SAFF), during its Working Committee meeting held on Monday, expressed deep sorrow over the recent Air India crash in Ahmedabad and condemned the growing number of violent attacks targeting tourists across the country, including the tragic murders in Pahalgam and Sohra.
SAFF Secretary Noor Nongrum described the incidents as “gruesome and calibrated acts of hatred,” stating that they reveal the dangerous intentions of individuals who seek to disrupt social harmony and undermine the rule of law.
Nongrum commended the people of Sohra, particularly local tour guides, along with the State Police and the Meghalaya Government, for their committed efforts in investigating the Sohra case. He said their swift and sincere response demonstrated the resilience and integrity of the community.
“This case should be a lesson for all,” Nongrum added, “to further improve rural tourism infrastructure — especially in the areas of safety, regulation, and the training of guides and homestay operators.”
He also issued a strong warning against what he called the “mindless, irresponsible and provocative maligning” of Meghalaya by certain sections of the media. “Such portrayals are dangerously absurd and baseless,” he said.
Nongrum emphasized the need to promote the culture, values, and hospitality of the people of Meghalaya throughout the country — particularly at a time when misinformation can easily distort the truth.
