Salgro13 clinch title at inaugural South West Garo Hills Basketball Tournament

Garobadha, Dec 14: Salgro13 of Resubelpara, North Garo Hills, were crowned champions of the first-ever South West Garo Hills Basketball Tournament, marking a significant milestone in the district’s sporting history.

The two-day tournament on December 12-13 held at Garobadha was organised by the Garo Youth Development Club under the leadership of president Ritcham Sangma, in collaboration with the South West District Basketball Association (SWDBA). Matches were hosted at St. Dominic Savio Higher Secondary School, Garobadha, drawing strong participation and local interest.

The opening ceremony was inaugurated by Fr. Punit Kumar Lakra, Principal of St. Dominic Savio Higher Secondary School, who also attended as Guest of Honour, while Kredithson Ch. Marak graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Both praised the organisers for promoting basketball at the grassroots level and urged young players to pursue sports with discipline and sportsmanship.

Eight teams from across the Garo Hills took part in the tournament, including Salgro13 (Resubelpara, North Garo Hills), Ballers United (Williamnagar, East Garo Hills), G-Force (Tura, West Garo Hills), Ampati SWGHDBA, Young Grind Hoopers (Salmanpara), Samurai (Tura), and host team St. Dominic Savio Garobadha, making the competition highly competitive.

In the final, Salgro13 delivered a commanding performance to defeat G-Force, Tura, by 75–44, sealing the championship with a display of pace, coordination and tactical dominance. G-Force finished as runners-up after an impressive run through the tournament.

Individual honours also went to Salgro13 players, with Dingsrang G. Momin named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, while Amiel Wisely R. Marak received the Youngest Emerging Player award.

The successful conclusion of the inaugural tournament was widely welcomed by players, officials and spectators.

Organisers expressed hope that the event would pave the way for regular basketball competitions in South West Garo Hills and strengthen the district’s growing sports culture.
