Tura, Dec 13: Nokrek Heights School celebrated its Annual School Day at the District Auditorium on Saturday, blending cultural expression with a strong message on future-ready education, digital responsibility and child safety.
The programme, themed “Eternity,” highlighted the idea of continuity and change through music, dance and drama. West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Agarwal attended as Chief Guest, while Agatha K. Sangma, Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR), was the Guest of Honour.
Addressing the gathering, Agarwal praised the school for aligning education with contemporary needs, particularly its focus on artificial intelligence, mental health awareness and responsible use of social media. Describing the present as a “golden period” for Meghalaya’s youth, he stressed the importance of guidance and opportunities for students to realise their potential. He also noted that annual day celebrations provide a vital platform for self-expression and confidence-building among children.
Agatha K. Sangma commended the school’s efforts to prepare students not only academically but also for real-life challenges. She urged parents to strictly monitor their children’s screen time, warning against the growing risks posed by online predators. Citing international examples such as social media restrictions for minors in Australia, she underscored the need for active parental involvement in ensuring digital safety.
Managing Director Dr Jasmine B. A. Sangma outlined the school’s academic progress and future vision, guided by its mottoes “Simul Possumus” (together we can achieve) and “Quarrer Invenio Grandis” (search, discover, and grow). She announced that the school has maintained a 100 per cent board examination success rate since 2019 and has expanded to offer Classes XI and XII in Science and Humanities from 2024.
Highlighting innovation in education, Dr Sangma said Nokrek Heights is the only school in Tura with a Design and Innovation Lab, aimed at equipping students for advanced learning, including artificial intelligence, in higher classes.
The cultural segment featured a wide range of performances, including Hindi, Garo folktale and biblical enactments such as The Prince of Egypt, Apocalypse Paused by Children, Baghban and Do•uang. The evening concluded with choral and dance performances showcasing India’s cultural diversity, reinforcing the theme of “Eternity” through artistic expression.
