Samgong Murder Case | GSU demands probe, ₹10 lakh relief; Alleges institutional negligence

Must read

Williamnagar, July 21: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Eastern Zone, has expressed outrage and anguish over the brutal murder of a young girl in Samgong, East Garo Hills and demanded a fair magisterial inquiry, compensation, and action against officials involved in “institutional negligence”.

According to the GSU, the victim had approached the One Stop Centre (OSC) at Williamnagar seeking protection from death threats issued by her alleged boyfriend.

Despite informing the police, no protective shelter or security was provided, and the victim was allegedly directed towards the accused’s known location without a police escort.

The union alleged that the OSC officer reportedly gave the victim and her friends Rs 40 and sent them in the direction of the accused’s known location, allegedly to aid in tracing him.

“Therefore, we demand the deputy commissioner to institute a fair and impartial magisterial inquiry to uncover the full truth and fix accountability,” GSU sad in a statement issued on Monday.

Seeking the immediate arrest and prosecution of the accused under relevant BNS and POCSO provisions, the union also demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation and full legal assistance to the victim’s family.

“(We also demand) departmental action and suspension of any public officials found guilty of negligence or complicity,” it said while emphasizing systemic reform of OSC and Women Police Station protocols to ensure protection of vulnerable complainants.

“This is not just a case of individual failure — it reflects a systemic breakdown. The victim followed the legal path, trusted the system, and was betrayed. Her death is a tragedy born out of institutional apathy and must never be repeated,” the GSU stated

During a meeting held today, the Superintendent of Police, Williamnagar, has assured the GSU that the In-Charge of the Williamnagar Women Police Station has been suspended and that further investigation is ongoing.

The GSU has strongly urged the administration to act with urgency, transparency, and justice — to restore public trust and ensure that those responsible, both directly and indirectly, are held accountable.
