Guwahati, Oct 15: Security has been stepped up at the newly built Baksa District Jail in Assam amid reports that the five accused in the Zubeen Garg death case will be shifted there following their remand to judicial custody by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court, Kamrup (Metro), on Wednesday.
The decision to move the accused to Baksa has sparked public outrage, with several locals gathering outside the court in protest, alleging that the move is an attempt to extend preferential treatment to those involved.
Speculation is mounting over the government’s choice of Baksa Jail — a facility that has remained empty since its inauguration by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 21 this year. With a capacity of 200 inmates, the jail has yet to house any prisoners, leading to questions about whether the authorities are trying to shield the accused from public scrutiny and possible hostility inside other jails.

The atmosphere in Mushalpur, where the jail is located, remains tense as police tighten security ahead of the accused’s expected arrival. Authorities have warned that even a minor security lapse could trigger unrest.
The five accused — prominent personalities Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma, along with Sandeepan Garg and two personal security officers, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya — were remanded to judicial custody on Wednesday after the conclusion of their CID remand.
Mahanta and Sharma were produced before the CJM Court in Guwahati under heavy security. Law enforcement officials maintained strict vigilance during their transfer, reflecting the high-profile and sensitive nature of the case.
Senior advocate Mintu Saikia confirmed that none of the accused have applied for bail.
Sources revealed that while Mahanta and Sharma are likely to be moved to Baksa District Jail, temporary arrangements have been made at Guwahati Central Jail. Before being lodged in custody, all five accused will undergo mandatory medical examinations at the Pan Bazar Police Station.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) continues to probe the case, with further judicial developments expected in the coming days.
