Guwahati, Sept 3: Two premier institutions in Shillong — St. Edmund’s College and Shillong College — hosted noted conservation scientist Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar on September 2, underscoring Northeast India’s ecological importance and the urgent need for youth engagement in biodiversity conservation.
At St. Edmund’s College, the Department of Zoology in collaboration with the IQAC organised an awareness programme on “Wildlife Conservation: A Shared Responsibility.”Addressing over 200 students and faculty members, Dr. Talukdar, who is Secretary General and Executive Director of Aaranyak, highlighted the region’s extraordinary biodiversity and the growing demand for multi-disciplinary expertise in conservation efforts.

He encouraged students to contribute not only through academic research but also by participating in on-ground initiatives. Stressing the role of capacity building, he invited students to explore Aaranyak’s internship and volunteering opportunities, and advocated collaborative training programmes to align conservation goals with human well-being.
The Principal in charge of St. Edmund’s College, Br. Sunil Britto, felicitated Dr. Talukdar before his talk.
Later in the afternoon, Dr. Talukdar delivered another lecture at Shillong College on “Research Opportunities in the Field of Bioresource Conservation in Northeast India.” Addressing the Zoology students, he outlined diverse avenues for research in the region, urging them to devote time to learning directly from nature.
Once again, he underscored Aaranyak’s platforms for student engagement and called for structured training collaborations to strengthen conservation capacities.

Faculty members from both colleges expressed keen interest in forging partnerships with Aaranyak to equip their students with hands-on skills and create a new generation of conservation-oriented researchers and scholars.
