Shillong, July 21: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has announced significant progress in the establishment of medical colleges in Shillong and Tura.
The Shillong Medical College has made substantial progress, with the Chief Minister determined to complete all procedures and start the medical college at the earliest.
“We should be able to meet the target of the current counselling as per NEET announcement. The institute has just been told to immediately start the NEET counselling and the department of health and the government of Meghalaya will be announcing this advertisement shortly. We hope that in a period of time, we will be able to start the Shillong Medical College,” Lyngdoh said.
She informed that the registration and affiliation with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have been completed, and the college is awaiting the Letter of Permission (LoP) to officially start the first year of medical studies.
The minister mentioned that interviews are currently being conducted for two important departments, and the college is working to augment the requirement of teaching faculty, especially in clinical medical requirements.
“We do not anticipate that there should be any doubt that we should be able to start the course but the LoP is a necessary that needs to be given to the government of Meghalaya before we can officially start the year one of medical studies in the Shillong Medical College,” she added.
On the Tura Medical College, the Minister informed that the college is also progressing positively, with 78% of civil work completed.
She said the government is working on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for the running of the college, and the proposal is expected to be approved by the cabinet soon.
“The most important component for the running of the Tura medical college is the government taking up a decision on the model of a PPP mode that is intended for the running of this Tura Medical College,” Lyngdoh said.
“We have already completed the processes and procedures of EoI and these procedures are now being formulated for cabinet approval hopefully very shortly. Once we have a qualified player working under a model approved by the cabinet for the running of the college, I do not foresee that college will not be able to function by next year,” she added.
The minister expressed high probability that the Tura Medical College will be ready for the academic session of 2026.
“High probability, academic session of 2026 Tura Medical College will likely be ready.
We will share more information about the college once we have received the nod of the cabinet in the leadership of the chief minister anytime in the coming that the cabinet will be called,” she stated.
