Kohima, July 8: Renowned Naga singer-songwriter and cultural advocate Alobo Naga has been appointed Director of the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Dimapur, for a three-year term, marking a rare transition from the music stage to a key cultural leadership role.
According to a notification issued by the Governor’s Secretariat, the appointment was made following approval from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Alobo Naga has been appointed on a short-term contract of three years and will draw the pay and allowances admissible to a Director under the Government of India.
The order also directed Ashis Giri, Director-in-Charge of NEZCC, to hand over charge to the newly appointed Director.
Alobo Naga is among Nagaland’s best-known contemporary musicians, rising to national prominence with his band Alobo Naga & The Band and its hit song “Painted Dreams”, which became a popular anthem across the Northeast.
Over the years, he has built a reputation as a cultural ambassador, using music to promote themes of identity, peace, environmental conservation and Naga heritage. He has performed extensively across India and abroad while mentoring young artists and championing indigenous culture.
His appointment is expected to bring a fresh creative perspective to the North East Zone Cultural Centre, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture responsible for promoting the traditional arts, crafts, music, dance and literature of the eight Northeastern states.
As Director, Alobo Naga will oversee the Centre’s cultural programmes, festivals, workshops and outreach initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting the region’s diverse cultural heritage.
The appointment has been widely welcomed by artists and cultural practitioners, who see it as an opportunity to strengthen the link between traditional heritage and contemporary artistic expression across the Northeast.
