Shillong, Oct 10: Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of the Regional Committee for West Jaintia Hills, Sniawbhalang Dhar on Friday assured that the situation in Lapangap is under control and normalcy is expected to return in the next few days.
The assurance comes a day after a clash broke out between Karbi and Pnar villagers along the Assam and Meghalaya interstate border resulting in the death of one person.
According to Dhar, the incident occurred due to harvesting by local residents, which has never happened before, and is not directly related to the border dispute between the two states.
He told reporters that the Chief Ministers of both states have spoken, and the regional committees will decide on the course of action to resolve the issue.
Dhar emphasized that the district administration has been instructed to coordinate with their Assam counterparts to prevent escalation of the situation.
“As of now, the situation is normal and under control, and hopefully, it will be okay in the next few days,” he said while informing that the regional committees will not be planning to meet at this juncture.
When asked, Dhar clarified that some areas (from Khanduli and Psiar) along the border are under dispute, but the incident occurred in an area that is not disputed. The regional committees of both states will decide on the status of the area.
The Deputy CM also mentioned that harvesting activities have been stopped for now, but efforts are being made to ensure that it resumes normally after discussions.
“We want to ensure that a few days after discussion, the harvesting should take place normally as usual,” he said.
“We are looking into this matter very closely to make sure the situation do not escalate further,” Dhar further assured.
