Six detained for disrupting boundary wall construction at Zubeen Garg’s cremation site

Guwahati, Sept 26: Police detained six youngsters for creating a ruckus by halting the construction of a boundary wall at Kamerkuchi, Sonapur, where Assam’s legendary singer Zubeen Garg was cremated with full state honours.

According to reports, the youths, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, stopped the ongoing construction work and hurled abusive language at locals present at the site.

The detained individuals have been identified as Arup Phukan (32), Migam Sharma (29), Arup Das (33), Hirakjyoti Kakati (32), Debasish Thakuria (30), and Priyanka Phangso (28).

“Yesterday, six youths consuming alcohol came at Kamerkuchi and stopped ongoing work of the boundary wall. They came and used abusive language when we were praying for the eternal peace of our beloved Zubeen Garg. We demand strict punishment to be given to them,” said a local resident.

Locals further stated that they have resolved to recite the Bhagavad Path daily till the Shraddha ceremony. “Every day we will do Nam Kirtan in the Samadhi area for the eternal peace of Zubeen Garg,” a villager added.

They also urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take strict action against the miscreants to prevent such incidents in the future.

Assam’s celebrated singer and cultural icon was cremated at Hatimura, Kamarkuchi NC Village under Panbari Mouza of Sonapur Revenue Circle in Kamrup (Metro) on Tuesday afternoon. His mortal remains reached Sonapur around 10:55 am, with thousands of fans lining the route to bid a tearful farewell.

His younger sister, Palme Borthakur, lit the funeral pyre, joined by Arun Garg, a digital creator and close associate, and Rahul Gautam Sharma, a writer, actor, and family friend. Around 85 family members and companions accompanied the convoy to Kamarkuchi, where mourners had gathered in large numbers.
