Guwahati, Sept 25: The Sonitpur district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry against Tezpur University authorities over allegations of showing disrespect to Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg following his death last week.
District Magistrate Ananda Kumar Das said students accused the university of failing to organize a formal Shraddhanjali programme, which they felt deeply hurt public sentiment. He also cited complaints that Vice Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh allegedly made derogatory remarks toward students who had independently arranged a tribute.

The situation escalated on Monday when heated exchanges broke out between the VC and students, eventually forcing him to leave the campus abruptly. “Due to all the provocative actions by the university authorities, particularly the VC, students approached my office demanding an apology and remedial action,” Das stated in the order.
Additional District Magistrate Kamal Baruah has been appointed to conduct the inquiry and submit a report within 10 days.
Amid mounting outrage, Tezpur University announced plans to install a statue of Zubeen Garg on campus and is considering conferring a posthumous honorary doctorate on the late singer.
The controversy deepened after the university’s Public Relations Officer, Samaresh Barman, resigned, citing the VC’s “autocratic functioning” and practices that compromised the institution’s values.
