South West Garo Hills celebrates International Women’s Day

Ampati, March 8: The South West Garo Hills district marked International Women’s Day with a vibrant celebration at the Multi-Facility Centre, Ampati, under the theme “Accelerate Action – Moving Towards Gender Equality.”

The event, organised by the District Social Welfare Office, Health & Family Welfare Department, and Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS), aimed to raise awareness on gender issues and honor women achievers.

Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Additional Superintendent of Police S. N. Marak attended as the Guest of Honour. Women officers and participants from diverse backgrounds came together to celebrate the contributions and progress of women in the region.

A key highlight of the program was a series of awareness sessions addressing gender-based issues. T. D. Ch. Marak, LCPO, DCPU, Ampati, led a session on Gender-Based Violence, while ASP S. N. Marak spoke on Women’s Safety and Security, emphasizing the need for a safer environment for women.

The celebration also featured cultural performances, including a welcome song by Chengkom Nokatchi VO, a skit by ASHAs, and a dance performance by beneficiaries of the Social Welfare Department.

Women achievers were honored for their outstanding contributions. Among them was Lastmania T. Sangma, Brand Ambassador of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, who has won 9 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze medals in Inter-State and Inter-District Taekwondo Championships. Also recognized were Trishna Ch. Marak and Silse N. Sangma, PWD SHG members, as well as ANMs from Gopinathkilla and Rongsangabagre Sub Centres for their efforts in healthcare.

A Tug-of-War competition added a competitive spirit to the event, with Japang VO securing 1st place, followed by Chengkom Nokatchi VO in 2nd place.

In her address, Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak highlighted Meghalaya’s progress in women’s literacy and workforce participation while acknowledging the challenges faced by women in traditional leadership roles. She urged women to take advantage of free Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) screenings offered by the Health Department and encouraged health workers to prioritize their well-being. Leading by example, she underwent a blood pressure and blood glucose test at the free health screening camp set up at the venue.
