Shillong, May 18: Meghalaya Assembly Speaker and North Tura MLA Thomas A Sangma on Saturday said a proper investigation should be conducted into the alleged suicide of Abiel Salchiana Ch Marak, a nursing student at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal, if there is a public demand for it.
Describing the incident as tragic, Sangma said he would reserve detailed comments until meeting the family of the deceased, a resident of his constituency in North Tura.
“It is a very unfortunate incident. If there is a demand, there should be a proper investigation. However, I cannot make any further comments at this moment,” Sangma stated, adding that he had just returned from Delhi and planned to visit the bereaved family on Sunday.
When asked about increasing calls for a judicial inquiry, he responded, “There is indeed a demand for a judicial probe, but without first meeting and consulting the family, it would not be appropriate for me to comment further.”
Abiel Salchiana Ch Marak, a 4th-semester B.Sc. A nursing student from Rongram in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, was found dead in her hostel room at RIMS on May 14. Authorities suspect suicide by hanging and have initiated an investigation.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) has urged the Manipur Governor to order an independent, time-bound inquiry into the death. Citing concerns of potential harassment, discrimination, or institutional negligence, the MPYC—echoing the Garo Students’ Union—has also demanded improved safety and support systems for students from marginalized communities studying in Manipur.
