Shillong, July 11: The state government has submitted before the Meghalaya High Court an inquiry report into allegations of illegal mining of limestone in the Jaintia Hills region by Amrit Cement Industries Limited.
The inquiry report has been taken on record during the hearing on a PIL filed by one Ranjit Chandra Goshwami here on Thursday.
In its order, the division bench of Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh has given time to the petitioner’s advocate to file an affidavit in response to the report, and any rejoinder to this affidavit may be filed by Amrit Cement Industries Limited before the next hearing on July 24.

The PIL was filed based on information obtained under the Right to Information Act, which suggested that Amrit Cement Industries Limited did not have a valid license for mining limestone.
According to the information, the company was allegedly using illegally mined limestone in its factory to produce cement.
The PIL was admitted on February 19, 2025. The inquiry conducted by the state government was based on the direction issued by the court on May 8.
