Shillong, July 11: The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) has elected Mr. Bijoy A. Sangma as Chairman of its Commission on Human Rights, Peacebuilding and Reconciliation — making him the first Indian to hold this position.

The appointment was announced during the 23rd Baptist World Congress held in Brisbane, Australia, the largest gathering of Baptists worldwide on Thursday.
His five-year term will begin on July 13 this year till 2030.

The BWA Commission champions causes such as religious freedom, social justice, conflict resolution, and reconciliation, particularly in regions plagued by violence and marginalisation.
Alongside his new role, Sangma will also serve on the BWA Resolutions Committee, which helps shape the Alliance’s moral and theological responses to global issues.
Speaking to HubNews via text messages, Sangma expressed deep humility and gratitude, “I am humbled,” he said.
“I give all glory to God for entrusting me with this global role despite my inadequacies….I will need the people support and goodwill always, as I seek to serve faithfully and humbly”, said Sangma.
He further noted the significance of the appointment not just for his Garo community but for the nation.
“It is not only a matter of pride for the Garos, not only the State, not only Northeast India but for India as a whole. I am the first Indian to be elected as Chair of a BWA Commission. I am humbled and glad to represent India in a global forum”, he added.

Sangma’s educational background is truly impressive and speaks volumes about his hard work and determination. He holds an MBA in Entrepreneurship, Business Management, and Strategy, and has completed two Management Development Programmes (MDPs) from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C), specialising in Project Planning, Monitoring, and Management. He also holds a Bachelor of Law (LLB), an MA in Christian Studies (MACS), and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Management Studies. A certified Six Sigma Green Belt professional and a UGC-NET qualified Assistant Professor in Management, Sangma has also undergone extensive international training on sustainable development in countries such as the USA, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Nepal.
