SHILLONG, DEC 16: The Meghalaya High Court has taken note of the progress made by the State Level Committee in identifying cremation sites across the state.
The committee has initiated a verification process in consultation with local communities, Deputy Commissioners, and Autonomous District Councils to identify 59 locations where cremation pyres are required.
The State government has also formulated budgetary proposals to provide financial assistance of ₹1 lakh per crematorium, with community contribution considered for excess expenditure.
The State Level Committee is monitoring the implementation of the court’s direction and will submit updated reports on land availability, infrastructure requirements, and funding proposals.
The division bench comprising Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice HS Thangkhiew in its order passed on Monday has adjourned the matter till April 15, 2026, directing the State to file an affidavit disclosing progress made.
