Tura, July 13: The West Garo Hills District Swimming Association will conduct swimming trials for the upcoming 39th National Games at the Tura Swimming Pool Complex in Rongkhon on July 19 and 26.
The trials are open to all interested male and female swimmers from the five Garo Hills districts — West, South West, South, North, and East — who are above 14 years of age.
The association has announced that no travel or daily allowances will be provided to participants. However, selected swimmers will undergo basic training at the Rongkhon Swimming Complex before proceeding to Shillong for the final selection process.
Speaking to HubNews, Sengrak D. Marak, Vice President of WGHDSA, said, “We have many rivers and water bodies in Garo Hills. I believe that if given the right platform, our youth can excel at both the state and national levels. The key is to identify talent and provide proper training.”
He further added, “the state government is actively promoting sports. This is a great opportunity for our youth. Those who perform well and win medals can benefit immensely from this.”
The Tura Rongkhon Swimming Complex was recently renovated for the 2024 Meghalaya Games. Since then, the West Garo Hills District Swimming Association has been managing the facility and training young swimmers.
