Shillong, Aug 19: The Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) has expressed deep concern over a recent attack on a 16-year-old schoolgirl in Jaiaw, Shillong and said police are on the job to nab the culprits.
The incident involved two masked robbers who injected the girl with a suspected drug before fleeing the scene.
Chairperson Agatha Sangma described the incident as “shocking” and emphasized the need for collective efforts to ensure children’s safety.
“We want to have a state where children are safe, and being able to go to school safely is a right of every child,” Sangma said.
The chairperson on Tuesday visited the child and spoke to her, praising her presence of mind in seeking medical attention promptly after the incident.
Sangma asserted importance of functional CCTVs and better surveillance in the state.
“We have to create much more better surveillance in our state, also we should have better security system,” she stated.
Although CCTVs are installed in the area, Sangma however informed that the footage is currently unavailable, and the girl couldn’t identify the attackers due to their masks and helmets.
“The police are investigating this and look into the matter,” Sangma said while expressing confidence that the culprits will soon be arrested.
The commission chairperson also appealed to children not to be discouraged by this incident and to continue attending school without fear. She emphasized that while this incident is concerning, children in Meghalaya generally feel safe while going to school.
Sangma stressed the need for a collective effort between the government and society to create awareness and make the community more sensitive towards children’s safety.
