Around 2,500 Anganwadi workers from across the Garo Hills on Monday staged a massive sit-in-protest at Matchakolgre LP School in Tura demanding immediate withdrawal of the Face Recognition System (FRS) for accessing take-home rations and other government benefits.
In a move to digitally empower frontline child care providers, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday handed over smartphones to Anganwadi workers during a program at St. George Higher Secondary School, Samanda in East Garo Hills district.
A section of the Anganwadi workers have demanded the state government to immediately consider promotion of eligible graduate Anganwadi workers, regularise services and increase the honorarium to Rs 15000 per month.
The Assam State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union (ASAWHU) has announced a "Dispur Chalo" protest on March 21, demanding a wage hike and allocation of funds in the 2025-26 State Budget for Anganwadi workers.
The event was graced by Thomas A Sangma, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, as the chief guest in the presence of Jagdish Chellani, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, among other officials.
