Empowering Grassroots Heroes: Conrad hands over smartphones to Anganwadi workers in East Garo Hills

Williamnagar, May 27: In a move to digitally empower frontline child care providers, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday handed over smartphones to Anganwadi workers during a program at St. George Higher Secondary School, Samanda in East Garo Hills district.

The event brought together Anganwadi workers from across the district. The new smartphones are expected to enhance their performance and services, from nutritional tracking to real-time reporting.

Joining the Chief Minister at the event were Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh and PHE Minister Marcuise Marak, who echoed the government’s commitment to improving service delivery in rural and underserved areas.

“These smartphones are more than just devices, they are tools of transformation,” underscored CM Sangma as he explained that these devices will bridge the digital divide, improve efficiency, and ensure better delivery of social welfare schemes.

These smartphones have been funded by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, who has sanctioned Rs. 6 crores for the purchase of 6,162 smartphones for the workers, supporting them in their critical roles. Each phone comes pre-installed with the POSHAN Tracker App — a mobile platform that Anganwadi workers would use to record data and information and perform other reporting tasks, ensuring better monitoring and implementation of social welfare schemes. The mobile application digitizes the physical registers used by Anganwadi workers, improving the quality of their work while enabling real-time monitoring.

The Chief Minister also informed that Anganwadi workers would be incentivized for regularly monitoring the growth of children up to 6-years-old by measuring their height and weight and uploading the data to the POSHAN Tracker.

But the day wasn’t just about technology. CM Sangma also distributed IIT Innovation ECO H2O water filters to Anganwadi centres, aiming to provide safe drinking water to children in rural communities.

He also inaugurated the new building of St George Higher Secondary School, Samanda, dedicating it to the students and expressing hope that it would inspire learning, creativity, and growth. The students of St George School also received the M-Tabs (Digital Learn Aid) at the programme.
