SHILLONG, JUNE 13: Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla has renewed the state’s push for Institute of National Importance status to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), warning that bureaucratic hurdles are limiting the institute’s growth and service delivery.
Following a visit to the Shillong-based medical institute, Shylla said NEIGRIHMS officials highlighted the same roadblock.
“Another key issue we want to push is granting INI status to NEIGRIHMS by the Union Government. This is very important for the institute’s growth,” he said.

The Minister noted that autonomy is critical for scaling up facilities. “Without INI status, expansion is difficult. We want NEIGRIHMS to reach its full potential and utilise its infrastructure to the maximum,” Shylla stated.
He pointed to delays caused by the current administrative structure. “Currently, even for minor matters, the institute has to seek permission from Delhi, which is causing delays and affecting its functioning,” he added.
Shylla said the proposal is now being pursued directly with the Centre.
“I have personally taken this up with the Union Minister and the committee concerned. They have asked me to submit the relevant documents, and I will be travelling to Delhi soon for follow-up. I have also briefed the Chief Minister on this, as we need to push the matter strongly,” he said.
Granting INI status would place NEIGRIHMS on par with AIIMS, giving it more flexibility in recruitment, finance and infrastructure development.
