Assam exports GI-tagged Tezpur litchis to Singapore

Must read

Guwahati, June 12: Assam’s prized Tezpur litchis have found another international destination, with a fresh consignment of the GI-tagged fruit being exported to Singapore on Friday.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma flagged off a 500 kg consignment from the cargo terminal of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, in the presence of Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika.

The export comes just days after Assam shipped 1,000 kg of Tezpur litchis to Dubai, signalling growing international demand for one of the state’s most celebrated horticultural products.

Speaking on the occasion, Sarma said the GI-tagged Tezpur litchi has generated strong interest in overseas markets.

“There is immense demand for Tezpur litchis outside the country. A few days ago, we exported 1,000 kg to Dubai and today another 500 kg consignment is being sent to Singapore,” he said.

The Chief Minister noted that buyers are seeking larger quantities, but limited availability remains a challenge as the fruit continues to enjoy strong demand within Assam as well.

Known for their distinctive flavour and quality, Tezpur litchis received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in recognition of their unique origin and characteristics.

The latest export is expected to enhance the global visibility of Assam’s agricultural produce and create new opportunities for local growers to access premium international markets.
