BJP leader and former cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai on Monday urged the Centre to exclude the scheduled area in Meghalaya from the purview of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as it would interfere with the matrilineal system of the indigenous people.
The Khasi Jaintia Church Leaders’ Forum (KJCLF) on Friday said enforcement of the uniform civil code (UCC) will result in the eradication of the matrilineal custom of lineage unique to the Khasi people.
Talking on implementation of UCC, Jipson R Marak also said that they are sending message to all the minister in regard to opposing the implementation of UCC, that are being the backward classes and under protection of VI (Sixth) schedule.
The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) held a crucial meeting on Friday with various stakeholders, including pressure groups, senior citizens, and the Bar Association, to deliberate on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The Chief Executive Member (CEM) Albinush R Marak, Deputy CEM Nikman Ch Marak, along with other Executive Members (EMs), attended the meeting.
The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has expressed its strong opposition to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stating that it will destroy the ancient customs, unique traditions and culture of the people of North East.

Keny further said that “the Home Minister Amit Shah has assured us that excluding Christians (in Nagaland) and some tribal communities from the scope of a UCC is being considered by the Law Commission.”
In a resolute display of their stance on a significant legislative proposal, the National People's Party (NPP) District Committee in Williamnagar held a momentous meeting at their party office, where they firmly voiced their opposition against the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. The committee expressed profound concerns regarding the potential adverse effects this code could have on the rich cultural heritage of the region.
In a significant development, the Mizoram Church Leaders Committee in a letter to the Law Commission of India has urged the government to rescind processing of the UCC.
