The Umiam bridge, a major lifeline for the state of Meghalaya, and the main bridge to enter Shillong city, has been undergoing retrofitting and maintenance work for over eight months now.
These are some of the hardy, simple village folks who have tread miles to sell fresh seasonal fruits, lentils mix (chana chur) and even car accessories to the halted traffic near Umiam Bridge
The present works are being taken up under Dam Rehabilitation Improvement Project (DRIP). The main objective of DRIP are rehabilitation and improvement of dams and associated appurtenances safety institutional strengthening. The major works under DRIP includes Drilling and Grouting of Dam, Crack repairing and Hydromechanical works.

According to the notification there will be complete traffic closure for minimum six hours on 31st March from 8.a.m to 2 pm. Only ambulance will be allowed to ply through the bridge.
From the viral video, it is seen that two people were stealing goods believed to be onions or potatoes from a moving mini-truck and placing the stolen items in a traditional Khasi bag (pla ïew), while two others followed the mini-truck on two Ntorq scooter, both with Meghalaya registration plates.
