Thousands celebrate Holi in Guwahati

Must read

Guwahati, March 4: Thousands of revellers flooded the streets of Fancy Bazar in Guwahati on Wednesday as the city erupted in colour, music and celebration to mark Holi, one of India’s most vibrant festivals.

The annual event, organised by the Holi Friends Club, transformed the commercial hub into a sea of white-clad participants smeared in bright hues, dancing to festive beats and exchanging greetings. Over the years, the Fancy Bazar celebration has grown into one of the most anticipated Holi gatherings in the city, drawing people from across communities and age groups.

Holi, celebrated across India, symbolises the triumph of good over evil and the arrival of spring. Rooted in the legend of Prahlad and Hiranyakashyap, the festival commemorates unwavering faith and righteousness, while the playful bond of Lord Krishna and Radha reflects themes of love and devotion — values that resonate strongly within Assam’s Vaishnavite traditions.

In Assam, the festival is observed with distinctive cultural expressions. In Barpeta, Holi is celebrated as Doul Utsav or Fakuwa, a multi-day spiritual and cultural event centred around the historic Barpeta Satra. Devotional songs, Gayan-Bayan performances and traditional rituals draw thousands of devotees each year, blending festivity with deep spiritual significance.

Back in Guwahati, security was tightened in and around Fancy Bazar to ensure a smooth and peaceful celebration. Police personnel were deployed at key junctions, and traffic regulations were enforced to manage the heavy turnout. Authorities also appealed to citizens to celebrate responsibly and uphold the values of mutual respect and consent.

Speaking at the event, Holi Friends Club organiser Vivek Sanganeria said the celebration has been conducted for decades with a message of unity at its core.

“There is no king, no rich or poor, no caste, no religion here. People from every community and every class come together to celebrate collectively. Our only goal is to spread happiness,” he said, while acknowledging the absence of some long-associated musicians and performers who were remembered during the event.

Participants echoed similar sentiments. Harcha, who attended with family members, described the celebration as joyful and well organised. “It is a festival of colours, joy and happiness. We are enjoying a lot. Happy Holi to everyone,” he said.
