Agartala, Aug 31: Tripura government has started issuing durable, consumer-friendly PVC ration cards to Public Distribution System (PDS) beneficiaries, replacing the old paper booklets to ensure transparency and digital support.
An official from the Food and Civil Supplies Department said Tripura is the first state in the Northeast to roll out PVC ration cards as well as install PoS machines for their use. Once punched or swiped at ration shops, the cards automatically update connected databases, ensuring real-time monitoring.

Of the state’s 9.91 lakh family ration card holders, 4.87 lakh beneficiaries will receive PVC cards in the first phase. The rest will get them in stages after completing mandatory e-KYC formalities. Many beneficiaries are yet to complete the process due to Aadhaar, residential proof, or relocation issues, the official added.
The new PVC cards, designed like voter IDs or Aadhaar cards, are more durable and resistant to damage, even in adverse weather conditions.
To further improve consumer convenience, the Food and Civil Supplies Department has also decided to convert 600 out of 2,072 government fair price shops into model outlets.
