Agartala, Aug 30: Three individuals involved in drug trafficking were apprehended by Tripura police with a significant quantity of narcotics, valuing around Rs. 2.5 crores.
The arrests took place at a checkpoint positioned at 91 Mile on the Assam-Agartala National Highway, near the Radhanagar area in Kumarghat, Unakoti district, on Tuesday night, according to a senior police official.
Superintendent of Police for Unakoti district, Kanta Jangir, stated that the police had received specific information from SDPO Kumarghat, leading to the search of a vehicle with registration number ML 05 Y 6858. The search resulted in the discovery of three individuals in possession of 551 grams of brown sugar. The contraband was found in the vehicle, which had originated from Silchar in the neighbouring state of Assam.
Jangir emphasized that the seized drugs carry an estimated street value of approximately Rs. 2.5 crores. The three suspects, identified as Vishma Deb Burma (35), Budhiram Deb Burma (34), and Jyotish Deb Burma (26), all residents of Bishramganj in the bordering Sepahijala district of Tripura, have been taken into custody.
An ongoing investigation has led to the initiation of a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case against them.
Additionally, law enforcement authorities have announced their intent to conduct further anti-narcotics operations across various parts of the district in the upcoming days.
In an endeavor to combat the drug trade, the Tripura police have launched a dedicated operation aimed at making the state free from the clutches of narcotics.
