Tripura removes cut-off date for political violence victims’ employment scheme

Must read

Agartala, June 12: The Tripura government has removed the cut-off date from its scheme that provides government jobs to family members of victims of political violence, making all eligible families entitled to benefits irrespective of when the incident took place.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the scheme, notified in December 2020, was initially limited to political killings that occurred up to March 9, 2018. Following a Cabinet decision, that restriction has now been withdrawn.

“If a person is established as a political martyr, the family will be eligible for benefits under the scheme regardless of when the incident occurred,” Nath said.

A scrutiny committee headed by the minister examines applications and verifies eligibility before recommending cases.

According to Nath, 38 applications have been received so far. Of these, 18 family members have already been provided employment, 11 cases have been recommended, five applications have been rejected and four remain under inquiry.

The minister said the scheme is not linked to any political party and applies to victims across party lines.

Citing government records, Nath claimed that more than 300 of the 15,589 murders reported in Tripura between 1993 and 2017 were linked to political violence. He also referred to widespread political violence during the period between 1978 and 1988.

The minister further alleged that Congress workers were among the largest groups affected by political killings and questioned the Congress party’s political understanding with the CPI(M) despite that history.
