Tura, Sep 3: Tura will witness a massive protest rally on Thursday as employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), backed by several social organisations, student bodies and civil society groups, take to the streets to demand release of their long-pending salaries.
The rally, expected to begin after 10 AM from William Point near the GHADC head office, will pass through Members’ Hostel, DC Office Road, Tura Bazar, Hawakhana, before returning to its starting point. Shops across Tura are reportedly planning to down shutters from 10 AM to 2 PM in solidarity with the protest.
GHADC employees have been without salaries for 44 months, fuelling growing anger against both the Council’s Executive Committee (EC) and the state government. Earlier, the EC, led by CEM Albinush Marak, offered to release five months’ pay and resume regular monthly salaries from November. However, workers have rejected the offer, insisting on full clearance of all pending dues.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has expressed willingness to step in, pledging that the government could help ensure regular monthly disbursals from November, provided GHADC undertakes financial reforms to prevent future crises. But the proposal has been criticised by social organisations and opposition parties, who accuse the state of undermining the Council’s autonomy.
With employees holding firm on their demand and political groups pushing back against government intervention, Thursday’s rally is set to highlight the deadlock over one of Garo Hills’ longest-running salary crises.
