Tura, Aug 13: Preparations for the 79th Independence Day celebrations in Tura are in full swing, with the rainy weather failing to dampen the spirit of participants. Full dress rehearsals were held at the Matchkolgre LP School Playground, the traditional venue for the annual event.
A total of 25 marching contingents will take part this year — 23 from schools and colleges, along with the all-women contingent from the 2nd MLP Battalion, the Brass Band from the 2nd MLP, and West Garo Hills DEF. The parade will be commanded by DSP Walsall Momin, MPS. Eight cultural troupes are also set to perform, highlighting the region’s rich heritage.
The celebrations will be graced by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbalang Dhar as chief guest. Officials, including the Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Agarwal, IAS, ADCs, and representatives from various departments, inspected the arrangements during rehearsals.
In a bid to engage students, the district administration organised a quiz competition during the final rehearsal, with participants answering 10 questions on history and current affairs.
Speaking to HubNews, DC Agarwal assured that security arrangements are in place, with police conducting sanitisation drives across key areas. He urged citizens, media personnel, and content creators to maintain decorum at the venue, reminded that August 15 will be a ‘Dry Day’, and encouraged the public to celebrate with dignity.
The day’s festivities will continue into the evening at DC Park, featuring cultural performances, live music, community stalls, and outreach programmes, including food distribution to TB patients, stationery kits for children’s homes, and celebrations at the district jail. Awards will also be presented to outstanding students, government employees, and achievers from other fields. Events will run from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
