Two-wheeler theft on the rise in Shillong; over 20 cases reported from Mawlai in one week

Must read

Shillong, Oct 03: The city of Shillong has witnessed an alarming surge in two-wheeler thefts over the past few weeks, leaving residents and authorities on high alert. Reports indicate that the incidence of stolen two-wheelers has reached unprecedented levels, especially in and around Shillong.

There have been reports of almost 3-4 two-wheelers (both bikes and scooters) stolen from Mawlai alone in just a span of a few weeks. The Mawlai police have raised concerns about this issue, sending precaution alerts to all two-wheeler owners of Shillong and Mawlai in particular. They have urged owners to carefully park their bikes and scooters and not to rely solely on stock locking systems but to use chains to avoid theft, especially when parking on the streets.

Reports of ‘professional’ thefts indicate that they can easily break the stock locks of the bikes and scooters and hot-wire the vehicle without needing a key. A similar incident was reported in Demthring area under Madanrting Police Station on October 1, in which one Yamaha R15 bike bearing registration number ML-05-S-9301 was stolen in a similar situation.

Reports of stolen bikes and scooters have piled up in every Police Station, but the chance of recovery is slim to none. Mostly, the police will link the rise in theft with the increase in drug usage.
